I was speaking with a friend this evening about transitions and opportunities in life, and how dismissive and flippant others can be of them, offering up off the cuff advice, often trying to sound positive by saying such things as "when one door closes, another one opens." I too am guilty of offering such clichés as motivational inspiration to others during their time of metamorphosis myself. In many ways they/we are right in saying so. However, as my girlfriend so thoughtfully pointed out in conversation tonight, we rarely ever talk about the transition. The focus seems to solely be on the beginnings and on the endings, no mention of the in between.

The transition being the in between of where we are and where we are headed. There is this stretch of hallway that we find ourselves walking through, sometimes even turning back a little to what is familiar in order to gain our footing once again. It doesn't have to be a place that is full of confusion, shadow, and unnerving moments. It can also be a place of great transformation and peace.  -tM
